January 22nd, 2025: After an extremely cold polar vortex has moved through Greenville, Pennsylvania, Thiel College’s Howard Miller Student Center (HMSC) has flooded, resulting in water damage and pooling throughout the first and second floor of the structure.
Around 11p.m. on January 22nd, 2025, Thielensian staff members were alerted to an emergency on campus. Videos of indoor “rain” and ponds of water gathering in the HMSC were sent from a variety of people, allowing us to respond quickly to the situation.
The third video was sent by fellow Communications student Emma Cannata, all other images and videos were sent via third party and it is unknown who the source is.
Pictured and videoed above is the water drenching the cafeteria and main hallway of the building, prompting students to wonder what will happen next for the structure as Public Safety and Thiel Faculty work diligently with the Greenville Fire Department to contain the water and manage the situation.
While it is unknown why there is water damage, speculation of burst water pipes in the building have been circulating. Students expect the college to release a statement regarding the damage, reasoning behind the flooding, and how students are to navigate one of the most critical buildings on campus potentially being unusable. The question now stands: how are residential students to manage meal plans and dining until the situation is resolved, if it is not solved as quickly as necessary?
