This past Friday, March 20, marked the first day of spring—not that the residents of Greenville, Pa. would be aware of it. Since the beginning of the month, the weather forecast has been so hard to keep track of, switching between bright sunlight and freezing rain. Winds have also been unpredictable, ranging from still breezes to whipping the walls of homes across town. The fluctuations in temperature have made everyday travel a gamble, with sweater weather one moment and early summer fun another. As the seasons continue to progress, there is a sense of unease that this pattern could continue into the summer.
This phenomenon is something common to Pennsylvania, as the battle between stubborn winter and spring has forced temperature swings throughout the month. The reason for this is the clashing of cold air masses from the north encountering the arrival of warmth and storms, leading to the previously mentioned contrasts in weather. This year, however, the extremes have been far more pronounced, according to the National Weather Service. Fluctuations varying over forty degrees, such as that of the past week, are quite rare and rank among the top temperature rises and falls according to available records. This variance is an incredible meteorological observation, but the general Greenville population has not been very pleased with experiencing it firsthand.
The Thielensian interviewed a selection of Greenville locals about their thoughts on the weather. “I’m not really in favor of it going from high to low, back and forth”, shared Dev’s employee Logan Ross. “It’s rough.” This sentiment seems to be shared by the population, as local Thiel student Zachary Roberts shared. “If this weather doesn’t get consistent,” he shared, “I’m gonna crash out.” Combined with the added stress of midterms and the restarting of construction, it would be safe to say that the general Greenville population lacks something to look forward to. Hopefully, spring can begin in full, and Greenville can enjoy warm weather very soon.
