Co-editor of the Thielensian Sam Mitchell had the opportunity to complete an internship for the Greenville-based Record-Argus this past summer. I sat down with Mitchell so she could reflect on her time there.
“The biggest challenge was starting it.”
Mitchell dealt with some personal issues that would delay the start of her internship for two weeks. She had to come back to Thiel over the summer to accomplish the internship. She had to lean on the people closest to her before she could come back to Thiel. “I’m very grateful for my partner and his family,” said Mitchell. In spite of this, Mitchell finished the internship two weeks earlier than scheduled.
Mitchell covered stories with a variety of topics, ranging from a little boy selling brownies for breast cancer awareness, the Thiel campus store, or a Democratic town hall that took place over the summer. The Record-Argus is apolitical, and Mitchell was the only journalist present at the town hall. Regarding this, Mitchell said, “I felt so amazing… when Mr. Stright, he let me write about it.”
Mitchell said seeing herself write and be in the field around professionals helped her realize she could be a successful writer. She also feels that this experience is going to help her work as the co-editor of the Thielensian. Mitchell remarked, “I’m very grateful for the people who took the time to talk to me, who took the time to correct my errors.”
Mitchell said she is proud of how much she accomplished and is excited to see what work she is going to do for the Thielensian this semester.
“I’m just very grateful for this experience, [and] I want that to be highlighted.”
