On August 24, 2026, President Donald Trump directed the federal government to rename Lake Ontario, “Lake America.” It is said to have caused a great the stir amongst many as they feel that Trump has decided to declare and mark everything around him as “his own.”
Trade tension and political dispute with Cananda led Trump to change the name of Ontario (or so they say) as Trump himself said, “If you think about it, we have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean. So, maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both.”
What is this…Barbie Land? I think it is quite absurd to change such a historical lake, as Ontario has been around since the 6th century with its original name. Prime Minister, Mark Carney stated, “Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario–then, now, and always.”
When first questioned about why the name of Ontario was being changed Trump responded, “no question.” When asked but later replied saying according to CNBC News, “Canada has always been ripping us off for a long time on trade,” says Trump. CNBC also states Trump addressing his “added feelings” for Canada saying, “They don’t pay for anything, and they want to be treated like a state, but they’re a state.” As if he didn’t already anger the Canadians by making them the 51st U.S. State.
When discussing trades and tariffs, sourced from PBS.org, information states that, “The new levies are expected to affect about 5% of Canada’s annual exports to the U.S., roughly $20 billion in goods ranging from hockey sticks to agricultural products. Prime Minister Mark Carney quickly promised Saturday that his government would roll out “dollar for dollar” retaliatory measures.”
So, in conclusion to this latest drop in news and name-changing games, I wonder how this will all play out in the end. On either side, this isn’t looking great amongst trade war uprises and tension between Carney and Trump. Let’s hope this doesn’t escalate into something either one can take back. Oh- and I repeat, STOP CHANGING NAMES!
