On Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, a fatal interaction between ICE officer Jonathan Ross and mother of three, Renee Good, took place. Since then, divisions across the U.S. have been brewing. Multiple videos of the tragic event have surfaced on the internet, ranging from widow Becca Good to Ross and other ICE agents’ perspectives. On that fateful Wednesday morning, Renee Good was parked in her vehicle, waving at least four other vehicles to pass her. Ross approached the vehicle, recording Good’s license plate with his phone, as Good told the ICE officer, “That’s fine, dude. I’m not mad at you. I’m not mad at you.”
The following events are where the divide occurs. Ross steps into the front of the vehicle. Two officers exit a Nissan Titan, ordering Renee Good to “get out of her car.” As the two officers approach, Good’s Honda Pilot is put into reverse. The officer who emerged from the driver’s side of the Nissan Titan attempts to open the door with his right hand while keeping the left on one of the windows. Good turns her vehicle’s wheels to the left, away from officers and backs up a few feet. At no point during the interaction did Good drive towards any officers.
At 9:37 a.m., the first shot is fired at Good. The vehicle under Good’s control continues forwards momentarily before a second shot is heard. Within the video, it is difficult to see whether Ross was hit or injured at all by the moving vehicle. After the vehicle slows to a stop, a third shot is fired at Renee Good, point blank. A total of three shots were fired. In a newfound video, Ross is heard muttering the words “fucking bitch” regarding Good after the shots were fired.
At 9:42 a.m., pleas from the crowd to let a physician through to check on Good are rejected as the ICE agents have their own EMS and medics on the way. Good remained in her vehicle, her status unknown.
The internet is divided between the side of Jonathan Ross and Renee Good, and it is apparent the U.S. president sided with Ross. President Donald Trump wrote, “it is hard to believe” the officer was alive. According to Trump, Ross shot Good out of self-defense. However, lawyer Paige
White points out in a video, “But ICE’s own policy prohibits what happened.” Even though ICE officers are not police officers, there is a code of conduct the agents must follow. Title 1 of the Department of Justice’s policy on the use of force states, “Firearms may not be discharged solely to disable moving vehicles…Also, placing oneself in the path of a moving vehicle constitutes officer-created jeopardy and undermines any claim that deadly force was necessary.”
Due to this information and the event, many people are posting a quote from George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984, which is about the dangers of totalitarianism, “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
