For J’Marcus Curry, joining The Thielensian is an opportunity to try something new and gain experience in journalism.
Curry, a freshman computer science major from Macon, Georgia, had never worked on a newspaper or participated in journalism before coming to Thiel College. He was introduced to The Thielensian during the college’s activities fair when Robert Doyle, a member of the football team and an editor of The Thielensian, encouraged him to sign up. “I got brought over and told to “sign up and write,” Curry said.
As a newcomer to journalism, Curry hopes to learn the basics of newspaper writing and develop his skills through hands-on experience. He is particularly interested in writing about sports and music, two subjects he enjoys outside of the classroom. He chose Thiel because of its athletic opportunities, participating in both football and track. When he is not in class, he enjoys working out and listening to music.
His favorite artist is JID, a rapper known for work in the hip hop genre. Curry also has an unexpected fun fact about him. When he was younger, he took ballet for about a year and a half as it helps with football.
Although The Thielensian is a new experience for Curry, he encourages other students to give it a chance. “I’d say join just to get that experience in journalism and meet more people,” Curry said. As he begins his freshman year, Curry hopes to use his time in the club to learn more about writing and discover what kind of stories he likes telling.
